Environmental Art
Environmental art is usually some form of sculpture for me.
I have a rule that what I create must remain in place and not cause harm to anything or to anyone. I don’t take any materials or ideas with me so I have to rely totally on the surrounding environment for all facets of my work.
I wait for the environment to speak to me.
Stones beg to be assembled into babies that slumber peacefully beside their river-mother. Desiccated desert branches unearthed after hundreds of years plead to be wrought together into the form of an ancestor spirit. For a short time they will bask again in the sun and share our times. Soon enough, the shifting sands will return branches and spirit to their peaceful repose, there to await another far-off dawn and perhaps another artist.
In many cases, the shadows cast by an installation are integral to or even more powerful than the installation itself.
… and all will return to Mother Earth.
Environmental art is a deeply spiritual experience.
