Murals
Murals are challenging … if you take them seriously.
They are so big that you can’t see them as one – or in perspective – as you are working on them. On top of that, you are usually up a ladder or somewhere along a trestle so it’s often not wise to step back in order to check on what is happening.
I love it when I am given the task of arranging a number of subjects/objects/ideas into a cohesive whole, all larger than life. The challenge is to weave the images and ideas into a two dimensional story that catches the attention of more than one type of viewer, age group or ethnicity.
I have (and still do!) painted simpler murals to illustrate, decorate, or just to cover grimy walls. But I really like being given a challenge to step up and tell stories about history, people’s feelings, how things used to look, what people had to cope with …
Do you have another challenge for me?
Oh … BTW … When it comes to murals …
